Easy Daily Attendance for Remote Learning (Before You Lose Your Mind)

When school started I was not prepared for how stressful attendance would be! Trying to figure out who logged in and when was just a lot of work, especially when you have kids sitting in front of you.  After trying a few different things, this method is the easiest one that I was able to find.

I saw different ideas about using different forms for each class and it started to get too complicated.  Instead, I created one form.  If you want a copy of my google form, click on the link and make a copy.

If you take the form and edit it so that it fits your class, then you can just click share and copy the link on your learning management system.  I decided to keep my form short and sweet.  My first form I created had different questions and I decided it was too much and it took the students too long. I decided to simplify my form and ask only for the student's first and last name and period.  When the form gets uploaded into an excel sheet, you will also be provided a time stamp.

After the students have taken the google form, you need to go to responses and click the excel sheet button.  The student answers will populate on the excel sheet.

Now this was the game changer.....

Download the chrome extension called toTabs. To download, open excel. Click on add-ons. Then, get add-ons.  Then search for toTabs.  To read more on chrome extensions, go to the link below.

The beautiful part of this chrome extension is that you can arrange the data by the different excel headings.  So when I am ready to take attendance, I sort by the period.  This will create a new spreadsheet for each period.  Once you have the students from the same period on one sheet, you can sort the names in alphabetical order. Highlight the last name row and go to the menu bar and click on data.  Then click on the sort sheet by column ____ from a to z.  This will make it easy to do a quick attendance reading.

I wish I would have figured this out a few days ago, but I used this for my last in-person class and got so much instructional time back. :D
